As the name suggests, this competition has deep roots connected to the Thai monarchy, evolving from a local regatta commemorating the King's birthday into Asia's premier international sailing extravaganza. The King's Cup, with over three decades of history, offers valuable insights into its evolution and significance.

Established on December 5, 1987, to honor the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) of Thailand, the King's Cup Regatta has become a cherished annual tradition. Thailand's constitutional monarchy accords the king a revered status as the embodiment of the nation's spirit.

King Rama IX's reign was marked by significant contributions to Thailand's socio-economic development and a deep passion for various pursuits, including painting, music, and sports.

Notably, he represented Thailand in sailing at the 4th Peninsular Southeast Asian Games in 1967, clinching a gold medal in the OK class. Thus, it was fitting that on his 60th birthday, sailors and crews united to inaugurate the inaugural King's Thai Cup Regatta in Phuket.

In recognition of its excellence, the regatta received the "Best Annual Regatta" accolade at the Christofle Asia Boating Awards in 2006 and 2007. Operated by the King's Cup Organizing Committee in collaboration with the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, the Thai Yacht Racing Association, the Thai Navy, and the Province of Phuket, the event boasts meticulous planning and execution.

Initiated by ML Tridhosyuth Devakul, a sailing enthusiast and advocate for Phuket, the choice of location at Nai Harn Bay offers breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea and Kata Beach.

The race comprises inshore courses, carefully curated to accommodate various categories and minimize interference among racing boats. With 63 courses meticulously set up to optimize the sailing experience, the King's Cup promises unmatched excitement for participants and spectators alike.
